Born 1960, Adana-Turkey, lives and works in İzmir

Studied architecture (BA METU, Ankara), photography (MFA CUNY, New York), and art theory (PhD Bilkent, Ankara). Since the 1980s, he has worked mostly with photography, photomechanical materials, and new media, exhibiting in group and solo exhibitions in New York, Ankara, Istanbul, Sarajevo, Sofia, and other locations. Since 1990, he has been a lecturer (Assoc. Prof) on art and design in various schools in Turkey, including Bilkent University, Ankara; Bilgi University and Yildiz Technical University, Istanbul; and Izmir University of Economics’ Faculty of Art and Design.

Founded in 2000 by  Guven Incirlioglu and  Hakan Topal (New York), as a transatlantic collaboration, and active until 2012, xurban_collective’s mission was to instigate the questioning, examination, and discussion of contemporary politics, theory, and ideology, utilizing documentary research and take the form of media projects, installations and texts. The collective focused specifically on areas of regional conflicts, military spatial confinement, urban segregation and “neo-liberal” exclusion strategies. The collective’s work has been shown at the Venice Biennale (2001), the Istanbul Biennial (2003), Apexart (New York, 2004), ZKM (Karlsruhe, 2004), PS1/MoMA (New York, 2005), Kunst-Werke (Berlin, 2008), Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary (Vienna, 2010), Pratt Institute Manhattan Gallery (New York, 2010), Galerie La Friche la Belle de Mai (Marseilles, 2010), EMST(Athens, 2011), and Gwangju Biennial (2012) among others: www.xurban.net
